Generally speaking, a year in advance is the recommended minimum, and if it is a trip that there is a lot of interest in with limited options, two plus years is not too far out. For example, there has been a lot of interest in the upcoming solar eclipses in 2026 and 2027. At this point, 2026 is almost impossible to book, and if you want a chance at the 2027 eclipse, you should be looking now.

On the other hand, if you are looking to do a Caribbean cruise, and you are not particular on a specific stateroom, you can book these six months or less in advance.
